Hearing of Kenya’s presidential election petition kicks off

By Samuel Ssebuliba

Hearing of the election petition by Kenya’s opposition, the National Super Alliance (NASA) challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election has kicked off.

Lawyers have begun making oral submissions after rules of engagement were set during a pre-trial conference over the weekend.

The lead counsel for the opposition NASA James Orengo was the first to present his submissions and he has been allotted 5 hours.

Earlier, the opposition said it would hold night vigils outside the Supreme Court for seven days to push for election justice, but they were blocked by police.

The hearing continues and a ruling by the seven-judge bench is expected by Friday.
