KCCA ordered to stop conducting arrests without police consent

The process of releasing the 70 drivers that were arrested by KCCA is underway.

The group was arrested last week for inciting violence, a claim they deny.

The drivers chairman Mustapha Mayambala says the Police Director of Operations Andrew Felix Kaweesi together with the driver’s lawyers and City Hall Court officials have issued production warrants requiring the suspects to appear in court tomorrow for their bail application.

In a meeting held at the police headquarters yesterday, the Police Chief General Kale Kahiyura directed Kampala Capital City Authority to stop conducting operations against taxi operators without involving the police.

He also tasked the city authority to coordinate with the police to ensure the drivers are released immediately.

KCCA deputy spokesperson Robert Kalumba has however declined to comment on the matter.
