UNEP concerned about safety of cyclists

UN’s Environment Programme has urged nations to increase spending on walking and cycling infrastructure to at least 20% of transport budgets.

According to UNEP’s director Elliott Harris, road networks especially in developing countries have been built for cars and not to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians, making it unsafe for them.

According to UNEP study released this week, unsafe infrastructure for walking and cycling, has been contributing to the death of over one million people around the world.
