Bukenya faces charges over CHOGM funds

Former Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has been summoned to the Anti-Corruption on charges related to expenditures for the 2007 Common Wealth Heads of Government meeting. Bukenya who was the chair of the cabinet sub-committee on CHOGM faces alleged charges of abuse of office. He has also been jointly sued with Motor Care Uganda Limited on alleged charges of fraudulent practice. His troubles arise from the procurement of vehicles which were used during the meeting in which government is said to have lost 6 billion Shillings. Nandala Mafabi is Leader of the Opposition

The Budadili West MP Nandala Mafabi has been appointed the leader of the opposition in Parliament. Mafabi beat several others in the race who included Serere Woman MP Alice Alaso, Terego woman MP Kassiano Wadri, Dokolo woman MP Cecilia Ogwal, Bugweri county MP Abdu Katuntu and Patrick Amuriat of Kumi county. He replaces Prof. Ogenga Latigo who lost the Agago County Parliamentary seat to John Amos Okot of the NRM. Mafabi has been appointed by the FDC Party President Col. Parliament approves Sekandi and Mbabazi

Parliament has approved the appointment of Edward Sekandi and Amama Mbabazi as the new Vice President and Prime minister respectively. The former speaker of parliament together with former security minister Amama Mbababzi were named by the president at an NRM caucus meeting yesterday for the positions of Vice president and Prime Minister respectively. Sekandi replaces Prof Gilbert Bukenya, while Mbabazi replaces Prof. Apolo Nsibambi who is retiring from cabinet. The motion for Sekandi’s approval has been tabled by Soroti Municipality MP Mike Mukula and seconded by Alebtong MP Rebecca Atengu, Bushenyi Woman MP Mary Karoro Okurut, and Dokolo county MP Okot Ogong. Believers begin martyrs’ day pilgrimage

97 Christian pilgrims from Kabale and Mbarara dioceses have crossed Mbarara town trekking to Namugongo, ahead of the Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for June 3rd. The 65-man delegation from Kabale diocese led by Julius Birungi Byakristu hopes to spend a maximum of 10 days on the journey. Birungi says the journey has been smooth so far except for insults from bystanders, who have accused them of being idle, with some even sending their dogs to attack them. The delegation from Mbarara diocese was drawn from Sheema district and comprises of 32 believers from the parishes of Mushanga, Nyabwina, Rwentunda and Kashekuro.

Police indentifies hooters

The police have identified 139 vehicles and motor cycles in connection with the opposition’s hoot campaign. The police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan region Ibin Senkumbi says they are hunting for the owners of the said vehicles for alleged involvement in the hoot campaign. The campaign launched by the opposition Activists for Change pressure group on Monday this week involves hooting and banging of tables and empty tins at the strike of the hour of 5pm every day. This is part of their civil defiance campaign to show dissatisfaction with government over the high cost of living.
