Luis Suarez scored on his 100th international appearance to send Uruguay through to the knockout stage along with hosts Russia as Saudi Arabia and Egypt were eliminated from Group A.

Russia’s 3-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday means both they and Uruguay have collected maximum points from their two Group A games.

Both nations are six points clear of third-placed Egypt with one game to play.

For the Saudis, there was at least a measure of redemption in the wake of their horror show against the Russians. They remain on a 12-game winless streak at the World Cup going back 24 years, and will be hoping to sign off with a win against Egypt in what is now a dead rubber.

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his sensational start to the World Cup with the winner as Portugal knocked Morocco out of the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after his header gave Portugal a fourth-minute lead against Morocco in Moscow

It took the captain only four minutes to make his mark in the way Morocco had feared, diving to get on the end of a Joao Moutinho cross and planting an unstoppable header into the net.

Ronaldo’s goal put the European champions briefly top of Group B and extended his lead as the top scorer in Russia in the race for the Golden Boot.

Spain’s 1-0 win over Iran, means they top the group courtesy of having collected fewer disciplinary points than Portugal.

Morocco, who last week failed in their bid to host the 2026 World Cup, became the first team to be eliminated from this one with one Group B game to go

African sides have now lost Eight of their nine games at this tournament conceding 18 goals scoring 5 goals with Senegal’s win over Poland the continent’s only success so far.
