By Damali Mukhaye.

Abuse of power by those in office has been cited as the major cause of sexual harassment at Makerere University.

This is contained in a report compiled by the special committee instituted to investigate sexual harassment at Makerere University which handed over its report to the university vice chancellor Prof Bernabus Nawangwe today.

The chair of the committee Prof Sylvia Tamale said that Alcohol and drug abuse have also fueled the practice as well as lack of awareness linked to harassment.

The committee among other recommendations proposes that contact between the lecturers and students are minimized, in that when they have any issues with their marks, they should approach their heads of departments or principals instead of lecturers.

The vice chancellor Prof Nawangwe has said the university is ready to pit recommendations in practice to end the vice.
