African Court’s 42nd Ordinary Session Opens in Arusha

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights today holds its 42nd Ordinary Session from in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Judges will among other things examine about 60 applications and four requests for Advisory Opinions.

The session will also see two new Judges sworn-in and election of the new Bureau.

The two new Judges; Lady-Justice Ntyam Ondo Mengue from Cameroon and Lady-Justice Marie Thérése Mukamulisa from Rwanda, were elected at last month’s AU Summit in Kigali, Rwanda.

The term of office of four judges namely Justice Augustino Ramadhani (Tanzania), current President, Lady-Justice Elsie Thompson (Nigeria), Vice-President, Justice Fatsah Ouguergouz (Algeria) and Justice Duncan Tambala (Malawi)—will come to an end on 5 September, 2016.

The Court is composed of eleven judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity.

The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.
