The judiciary has designed a system that will enable accused persons and their sureties to get back their bail money via mobile money.

This has been revealed by the Judiciary’s Chief Registrar Sarah Langa.

Early this month, the Chief Registrar of Judiciary revealed that they were stuck with over Shs26 billion bail cash which has not been claimed either because of ignorance or for fear of being re-arrested.

Langa says the mobile money system will benefit mainly those accused persons who do not have bank accounts.

Previously, the judiciary has been refunding the bail money only through bank accounts.

Bail money is refunded at the conclusion of the case whether one is convicted or acquitted.

Langa explains that for one to get back this money, they have to apply in writing to the court that granted them bail with their full name, address, and phone contact.

The said number has to be registered in the suspect’s name and documents such as an original bail bond form, receipt from Court, and where applicable, an original  Uganda Revenue Authority acknowledgement receipt has to be attached on the application.
