Police yesterday fired bullets and teargas at Barbie Kyagulanyi and National Unity Platform  MPs who had gone to deliver relief items to teenage mothers in Nakaseke District.

“In the company of Hon. Brenda Nabukenya (Woman MP, Luwero District), Hon. Allan Mayanja (Nakaseke Central) and Hon. Lukalidde Hassan Kirumira (MP, Katikamu South), we arrived at the Health Center only to find heavy deployment of security officers commanded by the DPC Mr. Kwesiga. Also present were pregnant women and teenage mothers who had come to receive some of the relief items,” Mrs Kyagulanyi explained.

Robert Kyagulanyi’s wife was intercepted by police on her way to  Kikamulo health centre III in Nakaseke to deliver donations from her charity organisation, Caring Hearts Uganda.

However, Barbie Kyagulanyi says she was hurt to see that most was seeing mothers and newborn babies teargassed.

“What hurt me most are the babies and the helpless mothers who were teargassed. We saw them washing baby’s faces. Uganda belongs to the people of Uganda, not security personal who also cannot afford two meals a day,” Barbie Kyagulanyi said.

The group was later sent back to Kampala before delivering the relief items. However, Barbie said she will follow up on the items that were left behind so as to ensure that they are distributed to the right people.

The items were food, mama kits, delivery beds and bedsheets.
