Coop week activities kick off today

The annual Cooperative Week has kicked off today with prayers in all mosques across the country.

Leonard Okello the Chief Executive officer of TheUhuru Institute, which is co-organising the event with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, says prayers will also be held in all Seventh Day Adventist churches tomorrow and other churches on Sunday.

The countrywide prayers will be centered on the spirit of voluntarism, servant leadership and integrity in the cooperative movement.

According to William Kitandwe, the Commissioner Co-operatives in the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Co-operatives, as the country gears up for the Cooperative Week with series of countrywide activities, there is need for government to increase funding to the cooperative movement.

He also reveals that President Museveni is expected to grace the event that will be culminated by a series of activities prior to the climax on July 7.

The other activities lined up for the week are blood donation at Health Center IVs in all Municipalities, cleaning of markets, launch of the cooperative study report and he I.K Musazi Memorial Lecture

The cooperators will also engage in tree planting for green growth all schools countrywide, and hold a cooperative symposium at the Civil College in Jinja hosted by WALIMU Teachers SACCO Union

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Sustainable Consumption and production of Goods and Services.”
