By Abubaker Kirunda:

Drug shop operators in Jinja have rejected a directive by the District Health Officer to start submitting monthly reports about their activities.

Dr Peter Dyogo the Jinja district Health officer had during an evaluation meeting organized by the Coalition for Health promotion and Social services [HEPS] an NGO promoting better use of medicines observed that some drug shop operators were involving in carrying out activities they are not supposed to do like helping women to give birth.

The drug shop operators claimed to involve in such activities because the grass root people they serve demand them.

They revealed that that they also wanted to start selling drugs like anti-biotic which they are not being allowed to sell yet the locals they serve do not have transport to reach the far places where the pharmacies allowed to sale them are located.

Dr Dyogo said the solution to have all these drug shop operators start sending monthly reports to both his office and National drug authority so that they act basing on their need.

However, the drug shop operators in a meeting held in Jinja on Monday said they cannot give monthly reports because their businesses are bound to be closed after discovering what they do.
