EAC boss speaks out on migrant crisis
The ongoing migration of people to Europe is evidence that African countries have failed to implement policies that could yield benefits to their citizens.
This is according to the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Infrastructure and Planning, Dr. Enos Bukuku was speaking at the official opening of a Stakeholders Meeting on the Sub-Regional Coordination Mechanism for Eastern and Southern Africa in Arusha, Tanzania.
He says poverty-stricken refugees are willing to risk their precious lives to cross the Mediterranean and face other risks knowing they could get a better life in Europe.
Dr. Bukuku adds that the migration provides an opportunity for African leaders, elites and governments to examine why the continent continues to score poorly on all development indicators.
The two-day meeting brings together UN Economic Commission for Africa Sub-Regional Offices and Inter-Governmental Organisations to discuss ways of ensuring development effectiveness.
