The opposition Forum for Democratic Change Party has expressed outrage over the manner in which the police handled their leaders yesterday as they planned to hold parallel independence day celebrations.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanakumbi, the party President Maj Gen. Mugisha Muntu criticized the government for what he called violation of their freedom to assemble.

Those arrested include Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Makindye West MP Allan SSewanyana and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

Relatedly, the Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi has scoffed at complaints by Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s family that the former presidential candidate was dropped home by a police van in the wee hours of the morning.

Kaweesi

Kaweesi told KFM earlier today that waht matters is having him back home safely and that no law was broken in returning him to his home.

Besigye was yesterday detained at Naggalama Police station in Mukono district after he was arrested by police at his home in Kasangati.
