Over 150 former employees of Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) have gone to the High Court seeking clearance to sue their ex-employer for unlawful dismissal.

These led by Lyndon Dennis Kiyimba; a former supply officer, with want court to order UNRA to compensate them with over 13 billion shillings in damages and terminal benefits for illegal retrenchment.

Kiyimba and others accuse UNRA of denying them a hearing before terminating their running contracts in December last year shortly after the appointment of Allen Kagina as the new executive Director.

The aggrieved former employees who include directors, engineers and drivers also claim that the restructuring has left them in the cold without employment opportunity as they are conceived by the public to be thieves and fraudsters although none of them has been prosecuted.

Through their lawyers of Bakiza and Company Advocates, they group wants court to allow them take on UNRA for non-payment of their salary arrears since some of them had contracts running until November 2017.

Deputy registrar Alex Ajiji will on Monday next week make a ruling on whether or not to allow 6 of these former employees to file a suit against UNRA on behalf of their colleagues.
