The High Court has nullified the election of Prof. Gilbert Bukenya as Busiro North MP and ordered fresh elections.

This comes at a time when Bukenya is on remand at Luzira prison over alleged misappropriation of CHOGM funds.

High Court judge Musoke Kibuuka has ruled that it was proved that Prof. Bukenya bribed some voters at some of his rallies in Kakiri.

He has now nullified his election as MP basing on the charge of bribery which the judge says influenced some voters.

Bukenya was sued by his political rival Caster Bukenya Hussein.

The Electoral Commission was exonerated of any wrong doing, and allegations of confusing voters by omitting some facts on the register overruled.

Prof. Bukenya won the contested race with 17,382 against 4,953 votes polled by his closest rival.

Justice Kibuuka Musoke has also directed Bukenya to pay the costs of the suit.

Bukenya who is currently at Luzira prison however didn’t appear in person and was represented by his lawyers for the ruling.

Prisons spokesperson Frank Mbaine says Bukenya requested to be spared the journey, preferring to wait for the report from his lawyers.
