A fuel tanker in transit from Eldoret in Kenya to the Democratic Republic of Congo has exploded in Kumi District.

Gregory Ageca, the East Kyoga region police spokesperson says the truck with front Registration No.CGO 2307AA/06 and rear registration No.CGO2308AA/06 was involved in an accident at the Atutur sub-county in Kumi District.

The cause of the accident is yet to be determined and the driver, identified as 42-year old Zia Ovua who survived the incident has been detained for questioning.

Police officers at Kumi Central Police Station along with officers from fire & rescue services from East Kyoga Regional Headquarters rushed to the scene to secure the scene and managed to cordon it off to prevent siphoning of fuel by the villagers that often results in huge fires.

Ageca has urged residents not to try to visit the scene to siphon fuel as they will not hesitate to arrest anyone in the interest of public safety.
