Gen Aronda at Parliament

Gen. Aronda Nyakairima’s fate remains uncertain.

This is after MPs on Parliament’s Appointments Committee again failed to come up with a decision on whether or not the newly appointed Minister for Internal Affairs should first resign from the army.

Sources from the committee say that a section of the ruling party MPs wanted the committee to approve Nyakairima following the Attorney General’s legal advice but this met stiff resistance from their colleagues from the opposition.

Those opposed to Nyakairima’s approval argued that they were not rejecting him as a person but sighted legal issues surrounding his appointment.

The MPs have now decided to summon the Attorney General together with Uganda Law Society to clarify on the matter.

Nyakairima was appearing before the committee for the second time.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the meeting, Gen. Nyakairima said he had answered all questions put to him to the best of knowledge.

The committee however approved Dr Erioda Tumwesigye as a State Minister for Health in charge of Primary Health Care and Mariam Wangandya as a deputy IGG.

The committee reconvenes on Thursday this week for further discussions.
