Army commander Gen. Aronda Nyakairima has confirmed reports that the M23 rebels are to vacate Goma, beginning today.

Gen. Aronda says the agreement was reached at a meeting held with the rebels’ commander last night, also attended by other army commanders of countries in the Great Lakes Region.

The withdrawal of the rebels was supposed to begin at Noon today and is to be completed within 48 hours.

Gen. Aronda adds that it was agreed that the DRC police would then be deployed in Goma, assisted by the MONUSCO forces. 100 neutral forces are also to be deployed at Goma Airport, together with 100 forces of the M23 rebels.

According to Aronda, the withdrawal of the rebels is to be effected without any conditions from either party.

Parties to the negotiations agreed on issues to be further discussed including logistical support for the forces at Goma Airport, the ceasefire agreement, opening of boarders as well as ensuring the security of the population, especially in areas being evacuated by the M23.

Two officers from members of the Great Lakes Region will also be deployed in Goma as well as officers from FARDC.
