The ministry of Foreign affairs has confirmed reports that some M23 rebels vanished in the bush ahead of their hand over to the Congolese Government.

According to the BBC about 15,000 rebels have run away from the Bihanga military camp in western Uganda where they were being held after they protested their repatriation.

The group’s leader, Bertrand Bisimwa, says they had left the camp because they feared returning home.

Although the UPDF spokesman denies that most of the rebels are missing, the state minister for Foreign Affairs Okello Oryem says only 120 rebels have voluntarily agreed to return home and they have been handed over to the Congolese government at Entebbe International airport.

The rebels fled to Uganda a year ago after being defeated by the Congolese army and UN forces.
