As events continue to unfold between Israel and Iran, Uganda’s embassy in Tehran has set up an emergency evacuation coordination centre.
This, according to Amb Twaha Matata, the Charge D’ Affaires, will continue to operate until further notice.
In a press statement issued last on Friday evening, the Ag Head of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Margaret Kafeero, says that the government now appeals to anyone with information on Ugandans still trapped in the Islamic Republic of Iran to reach out to the Embassy officials for help.
This is after 45 Ugandans evacuated from Tehran arrived safely in Istanbul, Turkiye yesterday. The group was warmly received by a team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Vincent Bagiire, accompanied by the Ambassador of Uganda to Turkiye, Nusura Tiperu and the Tehran Emabssy team, whose operations have now temporarily shifted to Ankara
According to Amb. Matata, the number of Ugandans known to the Embassy were approximately 150 out of whom 125 are students, 42 of whom have now been evacuated leaving around 65 students in Iran.
“Those who remained have voluntarily chosen to stay behind”, he emphasized.
