Government told to produce Jamil Mukulu not later than 30th January, 2017
The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Jinja has issued a warrant for the government to produce Jamil Mukulu, the former commander of the Allied Democratic Front rebel group not later than 30th January, 2017.
Mukulu was today scheduled to appear before Chief Magistrate Francis Kaggwa, to be committed to the High Court for trail but he has failed to appear.
There was confusion in Court when his lawyers led by Caleb Alaka, the chief magistrate Francis Kaggwa and prosecution learnt that the prisons service had no plans to produce Mukulu in Court today without providing any explanation.
Mukulu and others are accused of orchestrating several murders including the killing of Muslim clerics.
Mukulu was arrested in Tanzania in April 2015, where he had been living as a fugitive.
He was extradited to Uganda in July 2015, after a Tanzanian Court issued an order to have him tried in Uganda.
ADF was created in 1995 and operated mainly in DRC-Uganda border area. In 2013 it was estimated to have strength of 1,200 to 1,500 armed fighters located in north-east Beni Territory of North Kivu province, close to the border with Uganda.
The group was dispersed in 2013 and 2014 following heavy military offensives by the Congolese army and the UN stabilization Mission
On June 30th, 2014, the UN Security council listed the ADF as a terrorist group accusing it of committing serious violations of international law including recruiting and using child soldiers.
