Residents of Abim district in Karamoja sub region have asked that one ward in Abim hospital be named after former FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye.

They said this would work as an appreciation for his visit in the hospital that forced government to renovate the hospital.

One of the elders Peter Ocheng says if Besigye had not visited Abim hospital during the presidential campaigns late last year, the government wouldn’t have thought of renovating the hospital.

Government has finalised renovation works at Abim hospital. The 700-million-shilling contract was awarded to Pal Globe Engineering Uganda limited after Besigye’s controversial visit of the hospital.

While campaigning in the sub region last December, Dr Besigye made an impromptu visit to the referral hospital which had not received a facelift since it was built in the 1960s. His visit exposed the rot in the hospital.

It emerged that the hospital had been operating without a resident doctor for nearly three years and three nurses who helped Besigye during his visit nearly lost their jobs.

They were reprimanded by government for taking the FDC candidate around the hospital and exposing the despicable state of the health facility.

Just a month after Besigye visit, government releases she 700million for the renovation of the hospital.

The facility has gone through a major renovation including rebuilding and painting the hospital walls, building concrete seats for patients, opening sewage system, connecting water system, and electricity supply.

However, the assistant chief administrative officer Abim Nelson Olwit said there was no need to name any ward after Besigye saying he did nothing, adding that the government already had plans to renovate the hospital long before his visit.
