The hooting campaign has kicked off; with car horns heard ringing in the air in the city centre and other parts of the country.

Our reporter in the city centre says several owners of private cars, taxi drivers and bodaboda riders have participated in the campaign.

The campaign called by the Activists for Change is part of the activities organized to call the attention of the government to the increasing cost of living.

It comes on the heels of the Walk to Work protests in which at least 10 people lost their lives.

The Drive, Ride and Hoot campaign kicked off at 5.00pm and was supposed to go on for 5minutes.

Pedestrians were also seen blowing whistles and vuvuzelas on the road sides.

In Masaka town, motorists and riders also created deafening noise as they participated in the campaign, while others pounded their saucepans.

This is despite a warning by the police which says the campaign is illegal and infringes on the rights of other Ugandans who are not participating.

Police officers were however seen looking on as the hooting continued and it remains unclear if there have been any arrests.
