Information Technology experts have expressed fear that government will not actually collect the anticipated revenue from the social media tax after it became effective yesterday.

The controversial shs 200 daily levy on social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook that was passed by parliament in May officially came it use yesterday, 1st July 2018.

Speaking to KFM, Michael Niyitegeka an IT expert says the tax will not only infringe on peoples access to information but alsowill kick out many Ugandans from using technology because of the cost.

Niyitegeka adds that telecom companies should prepare to pay a bigger price since those who can buy data will tremendously reduce.

He meanwhile says the tax is detrimental on the government’s efforts of being an ICT driven country.
