More than 2000 people operating businesses at Kireka Market have been asked to vacate the place by October 31 this year to clear the railway reserve land and safety corridor.

In a September 27, 2016 letter, Rift Valley Railways (RVR) General Manager in charge of North Western Railway Mr Joram Nyanzi asked the traders to vacate the land saying it is both a road and railway reserve.

He said that the RVR seeks to set up a parking space for passengers on the land between Kireka and Namanve section comprise of Kireka farmers’ market and a lorry pack on Jinja Road.

He warned that this serves as final communication to all people currently illegally operating in the railway safety corridor.”

During a meeting, the traders said they were ready to vacate given clear direction and enough time to prepare for where they would be working from.

Describing themselves as local investors, the traders asked government to give them priority to get lease on the said before considering other people.

Gaster Mukasa, the chairman Namugongo Division Kira Municiparity in Wakiso District said the traders also have money to pay for the lease so that they can remain working.
