Makerere University Council has extended by one week the opening of the first Semester for the new academic year.

Last evening, the university management held an emergency meeting to allow continued negotiations between government, management of public universities and the striking non-teaching staff.

The extension means that the first year students who were scheduled to report on Saturday 15th August 2015 will now report on Saturday 22nd August.

However all continuing students who were scheduled to report on Saturday 22nd will report on Monday 24th August.

Kyambogo University also postponed its opening last Saturday over the strike by non-teaching staff who are demanding 31bn shillings from the government for their salary enhancement.
