Makerere varsity stands to lose 4 vehicles over debts

Makerere University risks losing four vehicles for failure to pay legal fees amounting to Shs.56 million.

The vehicles belong to the office of the Vice Chancellor, his deputy, the University Secretary and Bursar.

This is after the High court -Execution division issued an attachment order for bailiffs to impound the four cars and sell them in order to raise the 56 million shillings to city advocate Steven Ssenkeezi Ssali as legal fees.

The vehicles are to be sold by public auction.

Court documents indicate that in 2014, Makerere University agreed to pay Ssenkeezi the 56 million shillings as fees for representing one Hajjati Fatuma Nakatude and a one Uzobia Baine who were University employees challenging the procedure through which individuals occupying the top administrative posts within the University are appointed.

Makerere University agreed to settle the matter out of court and to meet legal costs incurred by the two plaintiffs. However to date it has failed to honour its obligations despite repeated demands from the lawyer.

So far one vehicle has been attached. The vehicle Reg. No. UAJ 667X belongs to David Kahonda Muhwezi, the university secretary.

The said vehicle is currently parked at the High court premises as the search for the other three vehicles continues.
