The Marriage and Divorce Bill has been presented to Parliament this afternoon, for the first reading.

The bill seeks to regulate establishment of marriages but also provides for their dissolution.

Among other provisions, the proposed law prohibits widow inheritance, provides that bride price is not compulsory and allows women to divorce impotent men.

The law also seeks to recognize cohabitation in relation to property rights but does not recognize same sex marriages.

The Marriage and Divorce Bill states that matrimonial property, household items acquired before or during marriage are supposed to be shared upon dissolution of marriage.

The proposed law which attracted a lot of public debate has been referred to the legal affairs committee for further scrutiny.
