MUK Probe Committee Questions Former Bosses

The committee set up by president Museveni to investigate the causes of strikes at Makerere University will today start interrogating former university administrators on why they sat down on previous reports.

Professor Abel Rwendeire the committee chairman says for the last two weeks, they have been reviewing various documents they intend to rely on for their investigations to come up with the report.

Rwendeire says the former administrators are important stakeholders who can provide the committee with relevant information as to why they ignored previous reports that needed to be acted on regarding issues affecting the University.

He adds that this inquiry will be closed to the media because the committee needs extreme concentration to come up with the report according to the public expectations.

At the beginning of last month, President Yoweri Museveni ordered for an indefinite closure of Makerere University following strikes from both lecturers and students which began towards the end of October.

The closure was prompted by a sit down strike by the lecturers demanding their allowance arrears amounting to Shs.28billion which had not been paid for nine months.

This is not the first time that Makerere University has been subjected into public inquiries. In 2015 there was the Omaswa report, the Kabaasa report and the 2008 McGregor report.
