Kampala Capital City Authority as closed down Mukwano industries over pollution.

The factory has been closed by a team of KCCA law enforcement officers led by the Chief Health Inspectors Dr. John Lule.

Dr. Lule has told KFM that this followed earlier warnings about the same that yielded no results.

He says they wrote to Mukwano management in March and April and gave an 8 and 28 day ultimatum which were both ignored, prompting such drastic action.

Dr. Lule says that the factory emits dangerous gasses into atmosphere on top of releasing effluent into water channels that serve the residents of the surrounding areas.

He now says that the factory will not be opened until clear measures are taken to address these health concerns.

Hundreds of workers are now stranded outside the factory premises and the factory has been cordoned off with limited access to the public.

Mukwano Industries located along 8th street industrial area manufacture a range of products including mineral water, cooking oil, and soap among others.

Meanwhile the company’s managing director Kaan Kamal has declined to give any details on the matter but said they were not given adequate time to address the issues raised.
