Legislators have been asked to fast track the passing of the organ transplant bill.

According to the Executive Director of Mulago Hospital Dr. Byarugaba Baterana, Uganda is expected to start performing organ transplants by October this year but this can only be done if there is a legal framework in place.

Dr. Baterana was speaking yesterday during a meeting with the NRM Central Executive Committee led by Captain Mike Mukula.

The Committee is touring various government projects which are undergoing renovation.

Dr Baterana said that 15 Ugandan Doctors have undergone training at India’s Yoshoda hospital while more are expected to be trained to perform heart, kidney and other surgeries.

He however notes that the surgeries will not be performed free of charge adding that only patients with national identity cards will be attended to.
