The Democratic Party’s Brenda Nabukenya is the new Woman Member of Parliament for Luwero district.

She has been declared winner by the Luwero District Returning Officer Peter Kasozi after a tightly contested race with five others including her closest challenger NRM’s Rebecca Nalwanga.

According to the returning officer, Nabukenya garnered 14,945 votes against Nalwanga’s 14,915 votes, a difference of just 30 votes.

Closely following in third place is the Forum for Democratic Change candidate Ziada Gwokyalya with 3,775 votes.

The other three candidates are Else Namagambe, Anna Kirabo Asiimwe, and Dr Lugudde Nabatanzi.

According to the recently up dated register for Luweero, the district has 188,671 voters.

The bi election resulted from the nullification of Nalwanga’s election by court recently over voter bribery.

The outcome of the election was challenged by her political rival and challenger, Elizabeth Lugudde Nabatanzi.

Meanwhile, speaking shortly after the final results were announced by the electoral commission this morning, the Luwero District NRM chairman Haji Abdul Naduli conceded defeat saying that this is a lesson to the ruling party.

Naduli attributes the defeat to internal wrangling, calling on the party leadership to embark on an internal clean up exercise to ensure unity in future and avoid such losses.
