A section of members of parliament is baffled by the push for approval of the proposed 15 new cities when their funding is not reflected in the cleared Shs45.5 trillion budget for the financial year 2020/2021.
The concern was raised as parliament convened in a special sitting yesterday to consider the new cities’ motion.
The chairperson of the budget committee who is also the Member of Parliament for Ntenjeru North in Kayunga district, Amos Lugolobi questions the source of funds for establishment and maintenance of the proposed cities, yet 72% of the budget funds is borrowed.
Lugolobi has tasked government to avail parliament with the financial analysis of the implications of creating these cities.
He says the creation of new cities should have been postponed and considered after ascertaining that the COVID-19 pandemic is contained.
