The long awaited city train service is finally here.
City dwellers today start enjoying the commuter passenger services between Namanve and Kampala at just 1,500 shillings.
According to the Kampala Capital City Authority spokesperson Mr. Peter Kauju, the move was a culmination of a partnership with the
Uganda Railways Co-operation and Rift Valley Railways.
He says the train will operate four times a day starting at 6.30am from Namanve reaching Kampala station at 7.30am.
It will then depart from the Kampala station at 7.35am reaching Namanve station at 8.15.
The evening journey starts from Namanve station at 4.15pm reaching Kampala at 5.05 and the last one leaves Kampala station at 5.30pm and gets to Namanve at 6.15pm.
Taxi operators under the Commercial Taxi Owners and Transporters Development Association say the move is welcome and they are ready for competition.
The group’s publicity secretary Mr. John Kitasimbwa says they are operating in a liberalized economy so those who can’t compete will fall off along the way.
