Couple arrested for marrying off under age daughter

A couple has been  arrested by police in Iganga for allegedly marrying off  a 15-year old daughter.

The suspects have been identified as Jabu Nakaziba 37-years and Richard Nalugoda 48-years who are residents of Nsozibiri village in Buyang sub-county in Iganga district.

The Busoga East police spokesperson James Mubi says the couple had asked the 17-year old in-law to pay them Shs150 000 as dowry of which he had paid Shs100 000.

He says the headteacher of the school where these two married children were schooling from tipped police  about this illegal marriage.

The mother of the daughter confirmed having received Shs100 000 out of the Shs150 000 she had asked.

She however says she decided to do so because the daughter told her that she was tired of schooling and that she not aware that early marriages involving under age children are illegal.

Mubi says the children will be charged with sex to sex case and th parents will be charged with marrying off under age children.

He says all the suspects are being held at Iganga CPS.
