The industrial area, which has been reduced to a ghost region, has a rail link and a railroad ferry wharf which was previously used for International traffic across Lake Victoria to Tanzania and Kenya.

The pier is now heavily silted and is covered by a dense mass of water hyacinth.

Speaking to KFM, the Head of economic growth at the EU, Cedric Merel says the contribution is meant to facilitate the country towards having a clean and greener transport system.

He says the support made by the EU towards the rehabilitation of port bell is a flagship project to make the central corridor more accessible to ease transportation of goods from Uganda to Tanzania.
