Former Old Kampala Divisional Police Commander Joram Mwesigye is today expected to appear in Court and defend himself on allegations that he assaulted a TV journalist Andrew Lwanga.

This is after Buganda Road Court Grade one magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu ordered Mwesigye who is at the rank of Assistant Superintended of Police to clear his name by defending himself on the said allegations, after she had studied the evidence of the six prosecution witnesses on 11th November 2016.

Mwesigye faces three counts including assault, occasioning actual bodily harm and other two counts of malicious damage to property.

Prosecution says on the 12th /January 2015 along Namirembe Road and Bakuli, in Kampala, Mwesigye unlawfully assaulted Lwanga and damaged his video camera and that of another TV journalist Joseph Ssetimba.

The 2 journalists had been assigned to cover a peaceful demonstration by a youth group known as the jobless youths who were marching to present a petition to the Inspector General of Police.

Lwanga sustained spinal injuries from the said assault and has since been using crutches.
