Menahile Government has maintained the August 30th deadline for sim-card registration warning that all unregistered Simcards will be switched off at midnight.

Addressing journalists at his office this morning, the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda said the resolution was reached after a consultative meeting with different stakeholders yesterday among them UCC, NIRA, mobile operators and members of parliament.

Rt Hon Rugunda says 98% of Ugandans have so far complied with the verification exercise.

He adds that the National Identification Registration Authority will continue to register and issue national ID’s to all those who have not yet registered and will also re activate those who will have their simcards switched off after verification.

Parliament in April passed a motion to compel government to extend the deadline after a public outcry.
