The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed significant gaps in the government’s response strategy for Uganda’s youth.
According to Dr Goretti Nakiwala a medical supervisor at Naguru Teenage Information and Health Centre, government should strengthen social protection systems for the youth in all its efforts against covid-19.
Dr Nakiwala notes that while the current approach may have reduced infection rates, it does not address the complicated and difficult social issues that will emerge in future thus calling for social protection structures to address social needs and social issues, especially for young people.
She adds that there is no representation of youth-led or youth-focused organizations on the national covid task force, which must be addressed urgently.
