Makerere University has shifted the blame of importing graduation gowns from China to the supplier whom it accuses of delaying to deliver the attire.
The University has been under sharp criticism by Ugandans on social media for defying the president’s order of supporting Ugandan locally made products under the Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) strategy.
The University Vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe says that they do not know why the contractor of Team Uniforms limited, who was contracted three years back to supply the University with gowns decided to import them from China.
He however admits that it is really disappointing for the great institution not to support the government programs and has pledged to institute an investigation into gown saga.
Sources had earlier said the supplier was withholding the gowns because he was still demanding pay from the university.
Yesterday, shs300 m was paid to the supplier to deliver the gowns.
