Government has offered 1billion Shillings to the Park Yard Market vendors but in the same breath, asked them to find alternative space for their business.

The announcement by the minister for the Presidency Kabakumba Matsiko follows the fire that burnt the market and the traders’ merchandise to ashes on Sunday morning.

Kabakumba says the market was located in a place that is not legally gazetted to accommodate markets and that the traders will not be allowed to construct permanent structures at Nakivubo.

She says the traders risk suffering such losses in future by continuing to conduct their businesses in the same place.

Kabakumba Matsiko adds that the market is too congested, making interventions in case of fire difficult.

She also says that the Park Yard Market was contributing to the poor sanitation in the city, given the huge numbers of people it accommodated.

She says the government will help the traders in identifying alternative land where they can construct their market.
