President Museveni has authorised security officers enforcing covid-19 directives in rural areas to use live fire to disable people who attack them with stones as a self-defence measure.
This command by the president comes after several incidences where security officers have been pelted with stones with the latest being a UPDF officer who has lost his eye to such a scuffle in Amuru district.
Addressing the nation today, Museveni has condemned such acts by people saying if people are violent to the security forces, they have a right to subdue and arrest you.
Museveni says much as they recently punished officers for brutalising civilians, nobody has a right to assault a member of the security forces.
It is from this that he has Okayed officers without anti-riot equipment especially in rural areas to use live fire as compared to those in towns who can have shields and helmets among others.
“Throwing stones at members of security forces is very dangerous. Stones thrown at officers without anti-riot equipment such as shield and helmets can result into deaths of that officer. Therefore, in self-defence those forces will use live fire to disable the stone throwers especially those in rural areas,” said Mr Museveni.
