The Ntungamo resident district commissioner, Mr George Bakunda on Tuesday strongly warned women and girls against sleeping with truck drivers with the excuse of making money from them amidst the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.
Mr Bakunda appealed to women and girls to observe social distance as the only measure to curtail the spread of the pandemic.
He noted that recently, a sex worker in Ntungamo was quarantined at Ntungamo Health Training Institute Nyarutuuntu after she admitted that she slept with a truck driver in a lodge for three days in Ntungamo Municipality. This left many town dwellers worried about being infected with COVID-19.
On noticing that the woman slept with a truck driver, the residents alerted the office of the RDC Ntungamo who swiftly swung into action and took her into quarantine.
Bakunda hailed the vigilance of the people urging them to continue with the gesture and also report any suspected case within their community for action.
However, the RDC revealed that the truck driver was not found with the virus and he wasn’t from Somalia as it was alleged.
He noted that, so far, the Ntungamo District COVID-19 taskforce has designated the former matooke market within the municipality as a stopover point for long-distance truck drivers.
Bakunda adds that these truck drivers will not be allowed to move out for meals but will come with their packed food and set off for their journeys in the morning.
Over 200 trucks make stopovers in Ntungamo Municipality, Rubaare town council and Kafunjo Miram town council in a month.
