The commission set the new deadlines to allow more time for phone users to verify registration of their simcards using national IDs and those who will not have complied by May 19th risk having them deactivated by the telecom companies.

Government says the exercise is meant to help the police fight the ever increasing crime rate as it will now be able to easily identify and track suspects.

According to security minister Gen.Henry Tumukunde, the lawyers are expected to come up with a concrete position before  the due date.

He adds though, that there will be no further extension of the deadline.
