Uganda People’s Congress has changed its deadline for the nomination exercise of parliamentary aspirants from September 25th to September 11th, 2020.
Speaking to the media in at the party’s headquarters in Kampala, the party president Jimmy Akena, says this has been done to enable the party’s electoral commission have enough time to prepare electoral materials. He added that the party primaries for city/division mayors and councillors went on smoothly at respective electoral units across the country on September 3rd and primaries for members of Parliament are scheduled to take place on 26th September 2020.
Akena has also asked the government to drop the charges on Covid-19 voluntary tests to enable the every citizen know his/her status. This is after the ministry of health announced that Covid-19 voluntary tests will be charged at Shs240,000 per person, while contacts and alerts with signs will be tested at no cost.
Akena opposed the move to charge Ugandans going for Covid-19 tests saying that the population is still struggling to recover from the lockdown and shouldn’t be further burdened. He said that if the idea is not dropped it will undermine government’s efforts in the fight against the pandemic. He also asked the government to avail face masks to every citizen from the age of six to help contain the spread of the virus.
