At least 70 people have died after consuming crude waragi in Moroto and Amudat Districts in Karamoja sub region in the last three years.
The local gin locally known as Wandago is transported from Jinja and is highly consumed at Kosiroi marble mining site in Tapac Sub-county in Moroto district and Loro Sub County in Amudat district.
The LC3 chairperson of Loro Sub County Francis Kongo says three people died on Christmas Eve adding that they have implemented bi-laws against alcohol consumption in the sub county.
The Mt. Moroto regional police Commander Richard Aruk Maruk says although police has tried to contain the supply of crude waragi in the region by arresting and prosecuting the dealers as well as pouring the impounded waragi, the main challenge remains on the waragi packed in sachets which can be easily hidden by consumers.
