In a statement, announcing the opening of the institution, Dr David Byatike Matovu, the University’s council chairperson said the University Council had imposed a fee of Shs 200,000 to be paid by the returning students on the day programme.

The money is meant to cater for the damage caused by the students, to replace and repair the vandalized university property. The University has over 3,500 students on the day programme and with each paying the 200,000 fine; the University is set to realize over Shs 700 million.

He said that before submission to the University, all commitment forms shall have to be sworn before a Commissioner of Oaths or Magistrate of the Courts of Law.

The University was on November 19 closed following a three day violent strike in which students destroyed university property.

They were protesting an alleged decision by the office of the Academic Registrar to increase retake  fees  from  shillings 100,000  to  200,000, and late registration  fee from  shillings  50,000 to 100,000.
