Nation Media Group-Uganda (NMG-U) in partnership with the Uganda Aids Commission has today joined in paying tribute departed loved ones lost to HIV and AIDS.

This comes amid growing concern about the rising HIV infection rates especially among adolescents.

This is in commemoration of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, which takes place on the third Sunday of May, and this year it falls on May 19.

Speaking at the event held at the Monitor Publications offices here in Namuwongo, NMG-U Human Resource Manager Alice Nankya said it is meant to raise awareness about stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/Aids.

“It is important that organization come up with policies of discrimination against HIV/AIDS and also not just coming up with them but also sensitizing staff about the policies and ensuring that they are implemented at the end of the day.” Ms. Nankya said.

Meanwhile the NMG-U Company Secretary Timothy Ntale says the company’s staffs join in commemorating the Candlelight Memorial Day to encourage local communities to take on health literacy and adapt HIV preventive practices.

“You know we are a media house and we are doing what we know best and that is to raise awareness, so we are doing our beat we hope that the decision makers, policy makers will also do their beat, all we want to do is to first of all remember people that have been affected by HIV/AIDS and also to just keep the matter for the decision makers to take It up and do what they are supposed to do.” Mr Ntale said.

The national commemorative event for the International Candlelight Memorial Day is currently underway in Hoima City under the theme;  “Ending AIDS by 2030; Keeping Communities at the Centre.”
