Former NSSF board chairman Onegi Obel has been charged with abuse of office and sent to Luzira prison.

Obel appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Sarah Langa.

He also faces charges of causing a financial loss of Shs 8bn to government which he allegedly jointly committed between 2003 and 2005.

Prosecution alleges that on behalf of NSSF Obel carried out an illegal private business when he went into a joint venture with Mugoya Estates Ltd, a construction company, and made the Fund pay Shs 8bn without ensuring financial viability for the investment.

He was initially charged jointly with Leonard Mpuuma, who was fined Sh. 100m in March 2008 after pleading guilty to the offence, former Labor Minister Zoe Bakoko Bakoru who is on a run in USA and businessman James Isabirye.

The magistrate also committed him to the high court for trial.

This was after the Constitutional Court dismissed his petition challenging his prosecution under the Anti-Corruption Act of 2009 for offenses allegedly committed between 2003 and 2005.
