The speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among has raised fears that Uganda might lose the PAMOJA bid to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) if the government doesn’t step out and move faster when it comes to construction of the stadium and other infrastructures needed by CAF to host the AFCON.

The speaker made the remarks while chairing today’s plenary sitting and she noted that Uganda won the PAMOJA bid with Kenya and Tanzania and that all the other countries are constructing stadiums and it’s only Uganda that is still behind.

Speaker noted that it is likely that if Uganda doesn’t move faster, the way it did on Namboole, the bid will be taken away and that is why the government has today brought a supplementary budget to get money to start the construction of the stadium in Hoima.

‘’ all the other countries are already constructing the only country which is still behind is Uganda and it is likely that if we do not move faster like we moved faster on Namboole that bid will be taken away from Uganda and that is why you realize today in the supplementary which is based on Afcon, we need money to start the stadium in Hoima and that must be started.” Speaker Among said.

In the supplementary passed by parliament today of 288.624 billion shillings the construction of a stadium in Hoima has been granted 152 billion shillings and the  money will be given to the contractor (M/S Summa) as part of the 30% advance payment, in order to enable the commencement of the construction of the stadium, which is meant to be ready before the deadline of 31st December 2025 as required by Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the  money will be drawn from the Petroleum Fund.
